Towards an Adaptable workflow management system

This paper introduces deenition and enactment models to characterize workkows. The proposed knowledge model provides concepts for modeling activities, data used by such activities, agents, and ordering operators and synchronization modes used for specifying activities dependencies. The behavior model provides dimensions that characterize workkow enactment. Both models are currently implemented in our work-ow management system called AFLOWS. Therefore dimensions are turned out into parameters that may take values within a set of predeened ones. The originality of our approach is its static and dynamic adaptability as diier-ent enactment models can be associated to a workkow simply by giving values to parameters according to application needs. Such an approach and system provide a exible support for specifying and enacting workkows that may be useful today to describe and monitor e-service based applications that run across wide area networks and multiple enterprises.
